Why not just insure my farm with a homeowner’s policy?

Your homeowner’s policy was designed to cover a dwelling, personal property, and personal liability. It was never intended or designed to cover high value farm equipment, farm structures, or farm liability.

Even if you consider yourself a “gentleman farmer” with a hobby farm and generate most or all of your income from another occupation, you still have a farm exposure not contemplated by your homeowner’s policy. Most coverage gaps occur with liability exposures. Whether it be an accident caused by the on-road collision of a tractor, pollution due to farm chemicals, or livestock collision, the personal liability on a homeowners isn’t sufficient to cover these exposures.
